Can you name the missing bone?
Super Skeletons
Our first topic of this year is Activ8 in which we explore ourselves and how our bodies work. This month we have been investigating our skeletons, what they are made of and how they help us move and grow with us.
In our Art & Design work we worked together in groups, cutting and sticking skeletons. We also coloured each bone in order to make them vibrant and each design original. We hope to continue to learn even more about skeletons in the coming weeks through our topic work.

Pipe People
We continued exploring the skeletons through our Activ8 topic this September by creating our own pipe people skeletons. We started with the spine, as one of the most important parts of our skeletons and added bones (made from pipes) to build up our skeletons. You can see some of the best designs here on the blog. |
City Planners
Year 5 started their 'Our City' programme this month with Paul from Belfast City Hall. We spent the first week planning a city and learning about the infrastructure of a city. Then we explored how to make our own city, where buildings and services should go and why. |

October

Busy Little Fingers
Year 5 continued our topic of Activ8 by exploring our sense of touch. We first conducted a fantastic touch experiment where we tested hot, cold, soft and hard items. You can see from our pictures that we also made fingerprint comics, using our unique fingerprints and annotating these to make them into characters. |
Brilliant Braille
This week we explored our sense of sight and specifically the work of Louis Braille. We learned about the life and work of Louis Braille. The pupils took part in learning the Braille alphabet and even tried writing and decoding their own Braille messages. |

Illusion Magic
Year 5 learned about sight this week. We looked at how the eye works and how we even see things upside down before our brain flips it the right way up for us. We also investigated optical illusions, taking part in lots of illusions as a class, the pupils greatly enjoyed trying to trick their brains and sight. Finally we made our own illusions called Thaumatropes, using card and string. |
Sniffing Superheroes
Our work on our senses continued with our penultimate sense this week when we explored our sense of smell. We looked at how our noses work, how snot actually helps us and how our sense of taste and smell are linked. Our experiment this week was to test our sense of smell and to see if we could guess the ingredients just using our smell. We had six mystery items/ingredients that we sniffed in our groups. We guessed the name of each item and then decided how strong the smell was to our noses. At the end we found that our noses are very good at smelling and identifying flavours. |

Let's Go Fly a Kite
In early November year 5 took part in the 'Go Fly a Kite' workshop. During our session we learned about the dangers of bullying, how we can help those who have been bullied and who we can speak to about concerns or worries. We then designed kites with anti-bullying messages and flew them outside in our playground. |

December
The end of the term in sight we moved into December. Christmas excitement in the air and year 5 working very hard right up until we finish on December 20th.

WANTED: YEAR 5
Our topic this term was 'Blue Planet' and as such we explored pirates. Year 5 learned all about the famous pirates from the past, their expeditions and their devious deeds. We made our own 'wanted posters', imagining that we were pirates. We used the green screen and some tea to add extra elements of detail and realism to our posters. They have been a big hit with pupils passing by our board. |
I'm a STAR-fish!
During PDMU we have been discussing our strengths, our interests and why we are so special. Using our topic of 'Blue Planet' we thought of using starfish to show all of our strengths and interests. We cut and coloured these and displayed them for the rest of the school to see on our notice board. |
|
Purple Mash Piracy
Year 5 enjoyed learning about pirates so much they wanted to showcase all the things they had learned using their UICT skills. Using 'Purple Mash' a virtual learning environment, year 5 were able to research some fantastic facts about pirates and combine them with quality clipart to make these practically perfect pirate posters. January
A new year and a new topic, this term we began our work on our 'Bright Sparks' topic, focusing on all things electronic. We have been working hard our multiplication and division tables, reading 'The Iron Man' by Ted Hughes, learning about pie charts and pictograms and finding out how circuits work.

Bright Sparks
Year 5 are enjoying learning about electricity and how it impacts our world and daily life. They have been learning about electricity and the importance of safety in this area. They have also been learning about how electricity works through our work on circuits. We have been reading 'The Iron Man' by Ted Hughes in class this term and so we made Iron man faces complete with working circuit diagrams on the back. (Right: Our 'Bright Sparks' display board) |

Perfect Pictograms
Year 5 have been learning all about Pictograms this week. So we created our very own. We made up our own multiple choice questions and then went around and asked all our classmates. After this we translated the data into information in a pictogram. Year 5 really enjoyed making up their own 'keys' for the graphs. |
February
In February we continued our work on 'Bright Sparks' and also moved onto our new topic of 'Our Wee Country'. Since the new year we have been focusing on our dividing times tables and working very hard at our reading and writing skills during 'Literacy Week'.

Our Favourite Things
We love to talk and listen in year 5. As part of our communication work we have been working on our public speaking skills. Every pupil was asked to bring in something that was important to them. They then had to tell the rest of the class all about their item using the 5 W's. (Right: Some pupils speaking to their classmates) |

A Door to Adventure
Seaview Primary School have been very busy preparing for Literacy week (beginning 26th February). The teachers have been preparing their classroom doors to show off the novels each class is currently reading. Each novel will take place in a different part of the world. Our theme for literacy week this year is 'Around the World in 80 Books'. (Left: Our classroom door, showcasing our current class novel: King of the Cloud Forest by Michael Morpurgo) |
World Book Day
Our celebrations during world book day took many forms and one of these was for the class to dress up in fancy dress as their favourite book characters. As you can see we all set off on a magical literary journey in Seaview Primary School's hot air balloon. (Right: Some of the fantastic costumes on show during world book day) |

February saw Crusaders win the East Antrim Shield and Seaview Primary School were delighted to have the chance to get their photos taken beside the impressive trophy. Many thanks to Crusaders FC for this wonderful opportunity. |
March
In March we started a brand new topic of 'Our Wee Country' in which we explore the Geography and History of Northern Ireland. We were also fortunate enough to go on many trips and take part in lots of fantastic learning experiences.

What a Bright Idea!
10 lucky children were chosen to accompany Mr Montgomery to the Titanic Quarter in Belfast this March. Seaview Primary School had been invited along with many other schools for the unveiling of the 'Mew Optic' and new Titanic walkway. The boys and girls were able to explore the Titanic Quarter and as well as meeting the Lord Mayor of Belfast they were invited to have lunch on the HMS Caroline. |

The Science Factor
Science week ran from Monday 12th March until 16th March this year and at Seaview PS we celebrated in many different ways. We had a visit from W5 who taught every class all about space and the science and technology behind it. Year 5 enjoyed learning all about the planets and even took part in some fantastic experiments to teach them more about the topic. |
We Are Readers
During Literacy week Y5 Montgomery visited Y3 to read to the children. This was a valuable learning experience for year 5 who greatly enjoyed spending time with the younger children and showcasing their own reading skills. |

Shared Education
In March Year 5 took part in the Belfast Shared education initiative with St. Patrick's Primary school. Both year groups had a brilliant time with their peers designing and constructing creatures for a forest walk. Many thanks to St. Patrick's PS for their support in this event. |
Eggcellent Eggtivities
During the last week of term the PTA organised many activities and competitions for everyone at Seaview. One of these fantastic events was the Easter Eggstravaganza, a collection of lots of easter themed games for ll the school to enjoy in their classes. A big thank you to the PTA for all ther hard work in organising this, the year 5 classes both greatly enjoyed the event. |
